When you visit Marmaris, and you are not out
sunbathing, riding the waves in the bay or the sea, or
checking out the historical attractions, you can expect
to be shopping.
Marmaris is a major urban center, and as a result, you will have a great
opportunity to find some of the best odds and ends,
antiques and knick-knacks in the area. When you are
shopping, know that some places will be more expensive
than others and some of those ‘antiques’ you buy are
nothing but forgeries. Of course, this is a danger
anywhere in the world, and Marmaris is no different.
Typically, shopping in Marmaris you will find the usual
specialties that include Turkish delight, carpets,
pottery, jewelry and historical items, which are quite
plentiful in the area, which is not surprising
considering its been occupied for nearly 8,000 years.
When you are shopping in Marmaris, one of the best
skills you can have is the skill to haggle. This is
especially true when you are attempting to buy goods
like leather, which can be bought for a good price if
you are able to bargain the seller down. This is not
like North America where the price is the price, in
Marmaris, the price is whatever the best negotiator can
get it to.
However, if you are staying in an apartment in Marmaris,
then you can go to the local supermarket, there is a
large one located on the main road before the harbor and
marina called Tansas, where you can find everything,
including brands you thought you could only get at home.
When you are shopping in Marmaris, you should be ready
to try your hand at acting like a local, rather than a
tourist. If shopkeepers know you are a tourist, you may
end up paying a bit more than you had previously
planned. As well, you can try and haggle a bit, which
may bring your prices down a bit.
No matter where you choose to shop, or how you go about
it, you better be sure to buy something. The last thing
you want is to go home from a beautiful city like
Marmaris empty handed!
